The Best and Worst of Times tells the story of how Denny Seiwell’s life and career unfolded through his time in the Navy, performing and recording in New York City and Los Angeles, becoming a first-call studio drummer, and joining Paul McCartney & Wings. The making of the albums RAM, Wild Life, Red Rose Speedway, and the classic single “Live and Let Die” are recounted in detail, along with all of Denny’s tours and travels with Wings, including the University, Wings Over Europe, and U.K. Tours of 1972-73. Seiwell reveals the inner workings of the band—from both a musical and personal perspective—and his ultimate decision to walk away from working with one of the biggest names in music history.
Following his departure from Wings, Seiwell immediately resumed his freelance career, working with various artists including Rick Danko (The Band), Joe Cocker, and Leon Russell, doing film score work with James Newton Howard, and taking on other projects. Through it all, Denny recounts his work, music, relationships, and his struggle with alcohol. He weaves a compelling story of riding a rocket to the stars, then coming to grips with the realities of the music business and his own frailties and addiction—and his ultimate recovery and happiness.

About Author
Denny Seiwell is a renowned drummer and a founding member of the rock band, Paul McCartney & Wings. Seiwell has also played drums for Billy Joel, Liza Minnelli, and has worked with countless other artists including Rick Danko (The Band), Joe Cocker, and Leon Russell. He has also played on many film scores including Waterworld, Grease 2, and Vertical Limit and was used on TV shows including Happy Days and Knots Landing. Born and raised in Lehighton, Pennsylvania, he started his career as a member of the first Carbon County Band in 1961. After graduating from high school, Seiwell enlisted in the U.S. Navy and played in the Navy Band. After moving to New York City, he caught the attention of Paul McCartney, who recruited him to be in is band Wings beginning in 1971. He was a member of Wings for nearly 3 years, and after leaving the band in 1973, Seiwell eventually moved to Los Angeles which continues to be his home. In 2021, Seiwell produced Ram On – The 50th Anniversary Tribute to Paul and Linda McCartney’s Ram along with Fernando Perdomo.
Robyn Flans has been a Los Angeles-based music journalist since 1980, working for such publications as Modern Drummer, Mix Magazine, Country Weekly, People Magazine, and many others. She has authored six music books, including two on legendary drummer Jeff Porcaro and Lucky Drummer, about The Tonight Show’s Ed Shaughnessy.
